Seeing that it is the season infested with mosquitoes these days, and dengue fever is on the rise again (read about an effective remedy for dengue fever here), I thought it’d be helpful to share some methods to keep mosquitoes away. Some of them may sound absurd to you, but they do work quite well.
I find that using insect sprays like Ridsect and Shelltox don’t work very well. It stinks up the house and the pests are still lingering about, much to our frustration. Even if you use waterbase sprays to lessen the unpleasant smell and chemicals, there isn’t much improved results.
So here are some things that we have tried over the years. Some work better than others, but try them out for yourself and see which suits you best.
1. Use Listerine.
Yes, as strange as it sounds, Listerine, the mouthwash solution, helps to keep mosquitoes away. Spray some Listerine around the area and watch it act as an effective insect repellant! You may think this is a more expensive way to keep mosquitoes away but if it works for you, it’s worth the money spent. Plus, it does keep mosquitoes away longer so it could very well be value for money!
2. Burn citronella candles or essential oils.
Citronella is a plant and it has properties that act as a natural insect repellant, called cymbopogon nardus. This is extracted and made into citronella oils which is then used in candles and essential oils.
3. Plant a pot of lemon grass.
This is similar to using citronella as lemon grass and citronella plants are from the same species. Lemon grass has a more pleasant smell and thus it may be more tolerable to use a natural plant like this in your home to keep mosquitoes away.
4. Use a high decible noise device.
I don’t if there’s a proper name for these devices. It comes in many designs and shapes. It’s actually just a simple power adapter to be plugged into a powerpoint. What it does is to emit a high pitched noise at a decible level that is sensed by insects and not by humans. This high pitched noise will keep mosquitoes away. However, this device has a lifespan so you will need to replace it the moment you find that it no longer works. The lifespan is normally stated on the packaging of the device and it is not expensive at all.
When I come across and try out more ways to keep mosquitoes away, this post will be updated to share more. Feel free to share your successful ways to keep these dangerous pests away.
