Papaya leaves juice a known cure for dengue fever

by Tipsie on November 12, 2008

It is a fact that there is no cure for dengue fever and therefore it is a much feared fatal illness. However, recently there has been a lot written about papaya leaves that seem to prove itself as a cure to dengue fever.

Only two spoonfuls of raw papaya leaves juice, taken once a day can help dengue patients increase their platelet count and therefore overcome the fever. Here is how you juice the leaves:

For each dose of 2 tablespoonfuls once a day, you need 2 papaya leaves.

Clean and pound them, and squeeze it with a filter cloth.

Do not boil or cook or rinse with hot water.

Use only the leafy part with no stem or sap

As for the usefulness of papaya leaves it is interesting to note that such claims are mostly made by the people from Malaysia and Thailand etc where Papaya plants are common and their leaves are easily available. Unfortunately all the claims are made by laymen without any scientific proof. There is no doubt that many plants have compounds that can cure diseases. That’s how the treatment for many diseases was discovered but there is a scientific approach to such discoveries. In this age of modern laboratory techniques, it is easy to analyse papaya leaves for chemical constituents to find out if any antiviral ingredient or platelet activating factor is present in these leaves. There is a technique for testing new treatments that is called as ‘Double Blind Randomized Clinical Trial’. The patients are randomly divided into two groups and one group is treated with active drug and other is given placebo. Both, physician and patient are blinded to the mode treatment ie they don’t know whether patient is on drug or on placebo and the results are analysed blindly. Until such trials are done no one can claim that papaya leaves are working especially in cases of dengue fever which has a very high spontaneous cure rate.
Most of the people recommending papaya leaves for dengue fever are probably unaware of the scientific process and how it works but the fact is that all scientific achievements have come through these methods. It is easier to make a claim on the basis of self-use of a product but what you perceive as miracle of your home made remedy may only be the work of nature. So if you have used something and feel that it is 100% effective for you, you must never spread it as a miracle cure for the disease because it has not undergone the scientific test and your claim is unfounded and may result in harm to other people for which you may be responsible. I do not doubt the good intentions with which the people are doing it but still one has to be extremely careful because it may cost someone his life.

In Pakistan we are having an outbreak of dengue fever and it is unfortunate that papaya juices and some other remedies have emerged overnight at drug stores and are being sold at high price as a definite cure for dengue fever. If someone wants to use such remedies as second line treatment while one is under care of a medical expert then maybe there is no harm (if you do not count the money being spent and the bitter taste!) but otherwise it is extremely dangerous because if you miss the low platelet count and do not get a transfusion it will be lethal.

I am growing a single papaya plant in my house and it is about 7-8 months old but the plant is already full of small fruits. At the start of dengue fever outbreak, I allowed everyone who asked to pick leaves but now only few leaves are left so I started disallowing but the people have started steeling leaves at night. Will any papaya lover tell me how to save the last 4 leaves at the top of my plant? Please!

Actually papaya leaves really do the trick, and yes it does increase the platelet count. To make it you need some fresh papaya leaves ,remove the veins(i know, such a vague description but im just a kid soo…) its better to crush it manually than using a blender and such.It did wonders and it was fast at it too ,however;it did taste ….*cough*cough…REALLY bad,but eh…it did save my life. And how do i know all this? i was infected with the virus when i turned 13 (2 years ago, what? haven’t seen a kid comment like this before?well too bad for you )and had to stay in the hospital for approximately a month!! i know it shouldn’t go for that long but it was partially the hospitals fault -_- medical facilities from where i come from weren’t that good. I got to the point where my blood pressure and platelet count was so low i couldn’t walk.It was crazzyy. Also i had this awful pain in my liver area and had a hard time going to the washroom.I was so close to getting to the second level of the virus,u know the excessive bleeding ,brain failure and so on ,but the papaya juice stopped everything from happening and i still live….hope this would help somebody and everybody out there that papaya juice DOES play a huge role in the get well process of the dengue virus :)
