Getting to know the freshness of your bread

by Tipsie on November 10, 2008

When you go grocery shopping for bread, you would normally choose a loaf with an expiry date that is as far back as possible, right? You may even decide to feel its freshness by pressing on it to feel if it’s soft or hard in texture. We’re all assuming the softer bread is the fresher loaf.

I recently received an email that apparently sheds some light on when a particular brand of bread, namely Gardenia, is being delivered to their distribution outlets. I actually don’t quite understand the significance of knowing the delivery day of the product, because consumers would normally buy their bread based on the expiry date, as mentioned earlier.

In any case, if it is of importance for you to know, here’s what I hear. Look closely at the plastic clasp that’s used to seal the loaf of bread. It usually comes in different colours and the colours determine the delivery day of the bread. Here’s the indication of which colours represent which day of delivery:

Monday – Blue
Tuesday – Green
Thursday – Red
Friday – White
Saturday – Yellow

I’ve not noticed them before, but I will have a look the next time I shop for bread. I don’t know how true this is either, so I’ll still resort to choosing my loaf by the expiry date. I think you would too, right?

I think I will still continue looking for a loaf by its expiry date…
