Breathing therapy for headache and tiredness

by Tipsie on January 21, 2009

Did you know that a simple breathing exercise can help to ease your headache and tiredness? It’s easy to do, can be done anywhere and anytime. Just spare a few minutes to follow these basic instructions and you may be able to lift some discomfort you feel along the day. Try it and see if it works for you.

Here are the tips to help ease headache and tiredness through a breathing exercise. It is based on the theory of the difference in role of each of our nostrils. Interesting stuff!

(Note: At the point of posting this tip, I have not experienced any headache nor tiredness, so I couldn’t test out whether this works for me! Let me know if it works for you.)

  • Our noses have left and right nostrils.
  • Apparently, the right nostril represents the sun/”heat” and the left side represents the moon/”cold”.
  • When you are suffering from a headache, close off your right nostril and use your left nostril to breathe for about 5 minutes. This supposedly will help to ease your headache.
  • If you feel tired, do it the opposite way. Close your left nostril and breathe through your right nostril. After a few minutes, you will feel refreshed.
  • Because the right side belongs to heat, it gets ‘hot’ easily. Likewise, the left side gets cold easily. Women breathe mainly with their left nostril, so they get calm down easily. Men breathe mostly with their right nostril, so they get angry easily.
  • When we wake up, do we notice which nostril breathes faster? Is it the left side or the right side ? If the left nostril breathes faster, you will tend to feel tired. Close your left nostril and use your right nostril to breathe to feel more refreshed.

Perhaps you can practise both the breathing technique methods one at a time to cure both.
